Atsata-Bame D.A. Basic School Makes History with Maiden Speech and Prize-Giving Day, Champions Digital Literacy.

Atsata-Bame D.A. Basic School in the Akatsi North Municipality of the Volta Region has marked a significant milestone with the successful celebration of its maiden Speech and Prize-Giving Day, an event that placed digital literacy at the centre of discussions aimed at improving teaching and learning outcomes. Held under the theme “Bridging the Gap in Learning Through Digital Literacy,” the celebration brought together stakeholders, parents, teachers, and community members to recognize academic excellence and promote the importance of ICT education.

The celebration was graced by a number of dignitaries, including traditional rulers, education stakeholders, parents, and community members who came together to support the historic occasion. The event was chaired by Mr. Raphael Zimabi, who was supported by his two deputies, while the Education Director of the Akatsi North Municipality and other executives from the education directorate were also present.

Delivering his speech, the Headmaster of Atsata-Bame D.A. Basic School, Mr. Adzato Daniel, described the occasion as a historic moment for the school, saying the celebration was not only to recognize achievements but also to appreciate the efforts of individuals whose sacrifices have contributed to the growth of the institution.

Mr. Adzato Daniel recounted the humble beginnings of the school, explaining that Atsata-Bame D.A. Basic School started in 2005 as a Kindergarten school on the veranda of Mr. Agblevor’s house with about 15 to 20 pupils and one dedicated community-employed teacher, Ms. Benedicta Azameti. He said as enrolment increased, classes were moved under the famous Atigagorme tree before the community later worked together to establish permanent structures for the school.

According to him, the growth of the school was made possible through the commitment of the people of Atsata-Bame, including chiefs, elders, parents, teachers, and other stakeholders who contributed their time, labour, and resources towards providing education for children in the community.

The Headmaster revealed that the school currently has a total enrolment of 147 pupils, comprising 84 boys and 63 girls, with a teaching staff of 11, including himself. He said despite the challenges facing the school, teachers remain committed to providing quality education and supporting the holistic development of learners.

Mr. Adzato Daniel highlighted some of the achievements of the school, including recording 100 percent pass rates in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in 2014 and 2016, producing some of the best BECE candidates in the district, placing fourth in the District Inter-School Quiz Competition, and representing the district at various cultural competitions.

However, he expressed concern over the decline in academic performance from 2021, attributing it partly to challenges with teacher accommodation caused by land litigation. He explained that many teachers who previously lived within the community now commute daily from places such as Metsrikasa, Xevi, Dzodze, Akatsi, and Ziope, reducing the amount of extra academic support available to students after school hours.

Mr. Adzato Daniel said the main purpose of the celebration was also to raise support for the acquisition of computers and ICT accessories for the school. He emphasized that computer literacy has become a necessity in today’s digital world and that pupils deserve equal opportunities to acquire technological skills.

He appealed to individuals, old students, parents, philanthropists, organizations, and other stakeholders to support the school with resources to address its challenges, including the construction of a kindergarten block, completion of the teachers’ bungalow, renovation of classroom blocks, provision of furniture, acquisition of computers and modern ICT equipment, and recruitment of additional teachers.

The Headmaster explained that the shortage of teachers has affected effective teaching and learning, resulting in multi-grade teaching at the Kindergarten level and teachers handling multiple subjects outside their areas of specialization at the upper primary and junior high levels.

Mr. Adzato Daniel further paid tribute to the pioneers, chiefs and elders, Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and School Management Committee (SMC) executives, past and present teachers, old students, parents, and community members whose efforts have contributed to the establishment and growth of Atsata-Bame D.A. Basic School.

He expressed gratitude to individuals who supported the school in various ways, including those who provided building materials, participated in communal labour, taught under difficult conditions, and encouraged children to pursue education. According to him, their sacrifices have played a significant role in shaping the identity and progress of the school.

The Headmaster noted that although the school has achieved remarkable successes in the past, there is still a need for collective efforts to restore its former glory. He called on all stakeholders to unite and support initiatives that will improve academic performance and create a better learning environment for pupils.

As part of activities for the celebration, students of Atsata-Bame D.A. Basic School showcased their talents through poetry recitations and other performances. The students also thrilled guests with a very interesting drama performance, which electrified the entire atmosphere and added excitement to the celebration. The impressive presentation showcased the creativity, confidence, and talents of the learners, earning admiration and applause from guests, parents, teachers, and other attendees.

The occasion also witnessed the presentation of prizes to deserving students who distinguished themselves in academic and other areas, as well as awards to deserving members of the community and old students who have contributed to the growth and development of the school.

The celebration also witnessed generous support from individuals and stakeholders who made donations towards the development of the school. Among the notable contributors was philanthropist Hon. King David, who donated a computer to Atsata-Bame D.A. Basic School as part of his commitment to promoting digital literacy and improving access to ICT education. His gesture formed part of efforts to support the school’s fundraising drive for computers and ICT equipment to enhance teaching and learning in the digital age.

The maiden Speech and Prize-Giving Day celebration served as both a reflection on the school’s journey and a call for renewed support to help Atsata-Bame D.A. Basic School regain its former academic excellence while preparing pupils for the future through digital literacy.
