Ketu South NDC Vice Chairman Aspirant Proposes Strategic Night Security Barriers on Aflao–Sogakope Road.

Youth activist and aspiring NDC Vice Chairman of the Ketu South Constituency, Dan K. Jerry Sorokpo, has called on the Ghana Police Service to consider introducing strategic night-time security barriers along the Aflao–Sogakope stretch of the Accra–Aflao highway to strengthen the fight against crime.


Mr. Sorokpo made the proposal in a letter addressed to the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mubarak, the Volta Regional Police Commander and Divisional/District Police Commanders within Southern Volta.


The proposal follows the reported removal of police barriers along the road amid concerns over alleged extortion of money from local traders and businessmen.


Mr. Sorokpo commended the authorities for their intervention, describing the action as a positive step towards transforming and professionalising the Ghana Police Service.


He said the decision had been welcomed by the public, particularly market women and traders who had reportedly experienced difficulties at some of the checkpoints.


However, he expressed concern that the complete removal of police barriers between Aflao and Sogakope could create a security gap, particularly at night.


According to him, while the removal of barriers may address concerns about alleged extortion, it should not be the only approach to dealing with misconduct by some officers.


Call for Strategic Night Barriers


Mr. Sorokpo proposed the establishment of two or three strategic night-time security barriers between Aflao in the Ketu South Municipality and Sogakope in the South Tongu District.


He said the barriers should operate strictly at night and be complemented by regular police patrols.


He emphasised that the proposed barriers must not become collection points or avenues for extortion, but should focus exclusively on crime prevention, emergency response and the maintenance of law and order.


“These suggested strategic barriers must serve strictly as crime-fighting and emergency response barriers, especially at night, and not operate in the daytime as the usual extortion points,” he stated.


The Ketu South NDC Vice Chairman hopeful further recommended the installation of CCTV cameras at the strategic barriers, with the systems linked to the respective District Police Commands.


He suggested that District Commanders should be able to monitor activities at the checkpoints through authorised devices.


Mr. Sorokpo believes such monitoring would help commanders supervise officers on duty, promote professionalism and improve accountability.


He also called for intensified night patrols along the Aflao–Accra highway, particularly the Aflao–Sogakope section.


According to him, the combination of strategic night barriers and mobile police patrols would provide greater protection for traders, commercial drivers and other road users who travel along the highway after dark.


Mr. Sorokpo additionally called for periodic in-service training and professional workshops for police officers deployed on major highways.


He said officers should be trained on how to interact professionally with civilians, especially traders and commercial transport operators.


He believes such training would help restore public confidence and strengthen relations between the police and communities.


The youth activist also proposed the transfer of police officers who have served for extended periods within the southern sector.


He argued that bringing in new officers could help promote integrity, professionalism and accountability at road checkpoints and district police offices.


Mr. Sorokpo said his suggestions were intended to complement the police administration's efforts to end alleged extortion while ensuring that security along the Aflao–Sogakope highway is not compromised.


He urged the police leadership and other relevant authorities to consider the proposals in the interest of public safety and the welfare of residents and road users.


The letter was dated August 7, 2026, and copied to Hon. James Gunu, Stan Xoese Dogbe, President John Dramani Mahama, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey and Nicholas Kwabla Worclatsi.

  Torgbui Nuwordu, a fetish priest from Klikor has been crowned the overall best farmer in the Ketu municipal at the  41st National Best Farmers day held on Thursday, November 27, 2025 at Agbozume Logove A M.E Zion School park.  He took home a tricycle, 10 cutlasses, 2 pairs of wellington boots, 4 bottles of herbicides, 4 bottles of insecticides, 1 spraying machine, 1 50kg bag of NPK, 1 50kg bag of Urea and a flat screen TV. Government Provides Relief Support to Flood-Affected Irrigation Farmers in Ketu South.

The Government of Ghana has extended relief assistance to 15 irrigation farmers in the Ketu South Municipality whose farms were severely affected by recent devastating floods that impacted several parts of the country.
