Somè Youths Turn Out in Their Thousands for 50th Somètutuza Health Walk.

AGBOZUME, Sept. 19, 2026.

Thousands of residents of the Somè Traditional Area on Saturday took to the streets for a mega health walk to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Somètutuza, with a strong call for peace, unity and the preservation of the area’s rich cultural heritage.

The colourful health walk, organised by the Somè Traditional Council, attracted close to 5,000 participants of all ages, including traditional leaders, political actors, youth groups and residents from communities within and around the Somè Traditional Area.

The initiative formed part of activities marking the Golden Jubilee of Somètutuza and was aimed at promoting peace, unity and healthy living ahead of the grand durbar scheduled for Saturday, September 26, 2026.

The walk began at Agbozume, passed through Nogokpo and the principal streets of Klikor, before ending at the Agbozume Lorry Park.

Participants sang songs of peace, harmony and togetherness throughout the walk, while organisers used the occasion to encourage the youth to take pride in and preserve the culture and traditions of the Somè people.

The Chairman of the Central Planning Committee, Torgbui Geli III, said the 50th anniversary celebration was deliberately designed to place the youth at the centre of Somè's socio-cultural development.

The theme for the celebration is: “Harnessing the Potential of Youth for Socio-Cultural Preservation, Economic Prosperity and Tourism Development to Foster Peace and Unity.”

According to Torgbui Geli III, the theme reflected the commitment of the organisers to empowering young people to become active participants in preserving the identity and heritage of the Somè Traditional Area.

He urged residents and visitors to participate actively in the remaining activities leading to the grand durbar on September 26.

The Publicity Chairman of the Central Planning Committee, Mr Daniel Jerry Sorokpo, expressed satisfaction with the peaceful nature of the health walk, describing the massive turnout as a demonstration of the people's commitment to peace and unity.

“As we mark the 50th edition of Somètutuza on Saturday, 26th, I encourage all Somè citizens to involve themselves in the activities of the celebration. This health walk has set the tone for a harmonious and peaceful celebration of the Somè festival.”

Mr Sorokpo also encouraged residents to make regular physical activity part of their lifestyle and prioritise healthy living.

He used the occasion to draw attention to the longstanding water challenges confronting communities in the Somè Traditional Area, particularly Agbozume.

He disclosed that discussions were ongoing with some non-governmental organisations to address the water situation, expressing optimism that the problem would soon receive the needed attention.

Mr Sorokpo further appealed to individuals, corporate bodies, NGOs and other stakeholders to support the anniversary celebration, particularly its objective of addressing the shortage of desks in basic schools across the Somè Traditional Area.

He said providing adequate furniture for pupils remained one of the key development priorities of this year's celebration.

Also speaking to participants, Mama Diaxa urged residents to take good care of themselves before, during and after the festivities.

She particularly appealed to young people, including young women, to make responsible choices, avoid risky sexual behaviour and remain focused on their education and future aspirations.

The 50th-anniversary celebrations will culminate in a grand durbar on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at the Somè National School Park in Agbozume.
