Volta Regional Police Commander Engages Market Women Over Alleged Harassment and Extortion.

The Volta Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Wisdom Akorli, and his entourage on Monday, August 31, 2026, visited market women and traders in parts of the Southern Volta Region to engage them over allegations of harassment and extortion by some police officers.


According to the Volta Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Chief Inspector Francis Kwaku Gomado, the team began its tour from Sogakope, passing through Akatsi, Agbozume in the Ketu South Municipality, and subsequently proceeded to Aflao.


Addressing traders at Agbozume, Chief Inspector Gomado said the visit was prompted by reports that some police officers stationed along the Aflao–Accra highway allegedly harass and demand money from traders transporting goods.


He stressed that police officers have no authority to demand money from traders or other road users simply for transporting their goods.


According to the allegations, traders carrying items including rice, sugar, cooking oil, beans and vegetables are sometimes stopped and asked to produce receipts for their goods. Those who are unable to produce the required receipts are allegedly compelled to pay money to the officers.


Chief Inspector Gomado also raised concerns about reports that some traders and travellers are detained for several hours on the highway, describing such conduct as unacceptable.


The market women who interacted with the police team confirmed the allegations, claiming that some officers demand not less than GH¢50 from them, including in situations where they are transporting goods from their homes to nearby local markets.


The Regional Police PRO urged traders and members of the public who experience harassment or extortion to report such incidents directly to the Regional Police Commander or his deputies for investigation.


He further cautioned that any police officer whose uniform does not bear his or her name identification should be reported, stressing that such officers would not be recognized as properly identified personnel.


Among the officers who accompanied the Regional Commander were Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Denise Fiakpui, Ketu Divisional Commander ACP Kudah, and the Regional Staff Officer, Mr. Felix Danku.


The delegation continued its engagement to Aflao as part of efforts to gather first-hand information and address concerns raised by traders and other road users.


The police engagement comes shortly after Mr. Dan K. Jerry Sorokpo, a youth activist and aspiring NDC Vice Chairman of the Ketu South Constituency, petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), the Volta Regional Police Commander and the Volta Regional Minister over alleged harassment and extortion of traders along the highway.


According to Mr. Sorokpo, the alleged activities have created anxiety among traders and other road users who depend on the Aflao–Accra highway to transport goods between communities and major trading centres.


He called on the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the allegations and take appropriate action if any police officer is found to have acted unlawfully or abused his or her authority.


The Regional Commander's engagement with the traders is therefore being seen as an important step towards hearing directly from those affected and addressing concerns surrounding police conduct along the busy corridor.

  Torgbui Nuwordu, a fetish priest from Klikor has been crowned the overall best farmer in the Ketu municipal at the  41st National Best Farmers day held on Thursday, November 27, 2025 at Agbozume Logove A M.E Zion School park.  He took home a tricycle, 10 cutlasses, 2 pairs of wellington boots, 4 bottles of herbicides, 4 bottles of insecticides, 1 spraying machine, 1 50kg bag of NPK, 1 50kg bag of Urea and a flat screen TV. Government Provides Relief Support to Flood-Affected Irrigation Farmers in Ketu South.

The Government of Ghana has extended relief assistance to 15 irrigation farmers in the Ketu South Municipality whose farms were severely affected by recent devastating floods that impacted several parts of the country. The beneficiaries received assorted relief items, including fertilizers, mattresses, bags of rice, and cooking oil, to help mitigate the impact of the disaster.
