The Dumenenyo Kete Foundation has marked World Tourism Day with a call for greater investment in the promotion of locally woven Kete as a major cultural tourism product capable of attracting visitors to the Ketu South Municipality and Ghana at large.
The celebration, held on Sunday, September 27, 2026, at the A.M.E. Zion Vocational Technical Institute at Klikor Satsimadza in the Ketu South Municipality, was also used to formally inaugurate the Dumenenyo Kete Foundation.
Speaking at the event, Secretary of the Foundation, Mr. Daniel Selorm Akakpovia, said the organisation's main objective is to promote locally woven Kete and give the indigenous craft greater recognition on the international stage.
According to him, promoting Kete could help attract both domestic and international tourists to Agbozume, Klikor and other Kete-weaving communities to experience the craft and learn about the traditions and stories associated with it.
Mr. Akakpovia said Kete produced in the area is of high quality and carries significant historical and cultural value.
He explained that the various Kete designs woven in Agbozume and Klikor are not merely decorative, as many of them represent historical events or carry specific meanings handed down through generations.
“Every Kete woven in Agbozume and Klikor has a story or a particular meaning. When tourists visit us, they will have the opportunity to learn about the history and the hidden stories behind Agbozume and Klikor Kete,” he said.
Mr. Akakpovia disclosed that the Foundation traces its activities to 2016 and has worked over the years to promote and preserve the Kete-weaving tradition.
He appealed to the government to support local weavers with affordable, quality threads, noting that the rising cost of weaving materials is adversely affecting their work and livelihoods.
He further appealed for the establishment of a Kete museum in the area to preserve the history of the craft, showcase different designs and their meanings, and provide another attraction for tourists visiting Ketu South.
Mr. Akakpovia also called on individuals, corporate organisations, development partners and non-governmental organisations to support the Foundation in its efforts to take Kete weaving to a higher level and create economic opportunities for local artisans.
Speaking on behalf of the Member of Parliament for Ketu South and Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie, Mr. Bright Dzila commended the organisers for establishing the Foundation and for their commitment to promoting Ewe Kete.
Mr. Dzila, who is also an aspirant for the Ketu South Constituency chairmanship of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), said the initiative complements efforts to preserve and promote Ghana's cultural heritage through tourism.
He said the Minister remained supportive of initiatives that seek to promote culture, tourism and the creative arts.
On behalf of the MP, Mr. Dzila presented GH¢20,000 to the Dumenenyo Kete Foundation in support of its activities.
The celebration highlighted the potential of Kete weaving not only as an important part of Ewe cultural identity but also as a tourism product that could create jobs, generate income for local communities and preserve traditional knowledge for future generations.
The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts has previously highlighted cultural tourism as a means of attracting visitors and fostering cross-cultural understanding, while also stressing the importance of safeguarding and promoting Ghana's cultural heritage.
