Hon. Dzifa Gomashie Donates 20 Streetlights to Denu Market, Promises New Market Shed Before 2027.
By Courage Edwin Amenuda.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ketu South Constituency and Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has donated 20 streetlights to the Denu Market to enhance security and improve trading activities.
The donation, comprising 10 boxes of streetlights, was made on Friday, October 9, 2026, as part of efforts to address concerns about inadequate lighting in the market.
Speaking during the presentation, Madam Gomashie explained that the donation was intended to improve security and create a safer environment for traders and customers, particularly after dark.
She noted that the new lights would replace previously installed streetlights she had donated to the market, which were no longer functioning.
Streetlights play a crucial role in market security by improving visibility, discouraging theft and other criminal activities, and helping traders and customers move around safely at night. Adequate lighting can also extend trading hours, improve access to market facilities and create a more welcoming environment for business activities.
Beyond the streetlight donation, Madam Gomashie announced plans to construct a new market shed at Denu Market before the end of 2026.
She disclosed that a contractor was expected to arrive at the site within a few weeks to commence work on the project.
According to the MP, the market women continue to endure difficult trading conditions, as many sell their goods under the scorching sun and face additional challenges during the rainy season.
She expressed concern about their situation, stressing the need to provide a more comfortable and suitable trading environment for the women.
Madam Gomashie also appealed to traders who sell along the roadside to move into the market to promote orderliness and improve the trading environment.
Receiving the items on behalf of the market women, the Queen of Hedzranawo and Denu Markets, Madam Margaret Tunu, popularly known as Fire, expressed gratitude to Madam Gomashie for responding promptly to their concerns.
She explained that she had made several appeals to the Ketu South Municipal Assembly regarding the challenges facing the market, but little progress had been made.
According to her, she subsequently contacted the MP to intervene, leading to the timely donation of the streetlights.
Some market women also commended the MP for the intervention, expressing optimism that the new lights would improve their sense of security, particularly when night falls.
The market women, however, used the opportunity to draw the MP's attention to the persistent flooding that affects the market during the rainy season.
They explained that the situation makes trading difficult, exposes their goods to damage and creates uncomfortable conditions for both traders and customers.
The women appealed for urgent measures to address the flooding and improve drainage within the market.
In response, Madam Gomashie assured them of her commitment to addressing their concerns and promised a prompt intervention.
The streetlight donation and the proposed construction of a new market shed are expected to contribute to improving conditions at Denu Market, which serves as an important commercial centre for traders and residents in Ketu South Municipality.
The successful implementation of the proposed interventions, alongside measures to address flooding, could help strengthen market security, protect traders' livelihoods and create a safer and more conducive environment for commercial activities.
