The Member of Parliament for Ketu South and Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Madam Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has commissioned and handed over a fully furnished six-unit classroom block to Avoeme Basic School as part of efforts to improve educational infrastructure in the municipality.

The newly commissioned facility, equipped with desks and other furniture, is expected to ease classroom congestion and provide a more conducive environment for teaching and learning.

Madam Gomashie also announced plans to distribute approximately 3,000 additional desks to about 16 basic schools across the Ketu South Municipality, with Avoeme Basic School having already received its allocation.

She clarified that the planned distribution of desks was separate from the furniture supplied with the newly commissioned classroom block.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Madam Gomashie disclosed that she had saved portions of her parliamentary allocation over several months to finance the construction of the classroom block.

She stressed that investment in education must extend beyond the provision of teaching and learning materials to include adequate infrastructure and support for teachers.

As part of efforts to improve teaching standards, she said she had organised capacity-building training for mathematics teachers in the municipality in collaboration with a non-governmental organisation based in Accra.

The training was intended to equip teachers with improved approaches to teaching mathematics and enhance learning outcomes among pupils.

Madam Gomashie said her interventions in Ketu South also covered skills training, healthcare and other human-capital development initiatives.

She cited the renovation of the Klikor Library, the provision of streetlights to communities, investments in health and education across the municipality's three traditional areas, and scholarship support for students pursuing further studies, including opportunities outside the country.

According to her, the interventions were designed to empower residents with the knowledge and skills needed to become self-reliant, generate income and provide for their families.

She urged parents, teachers, community leaders and other stakeholders to work together to improve educational outcomes in Ketu South and the Volta Region.

Mr Seth Akli, Head of Planning at the Ketu South Municipal Education Directorate, commended the MP for her continued investment in educational infrastructure.

He said her support had contributed to several school infrastructure projects across the municipality.

These include a six-unit classroom block at Akaglakope, a school block for Zuime Basic School, an ongoing kindergarten block at Hatsukope, and a three-unit classroom block with ancillary facilities at Glidzi.

He noted that such interventions were important in addressing infrastructure gaps and improving the conditions under which pupils and teachers operate.

The Headmaster of Avoeme Basic School, Mr William Katamani, said the school had previously struggled with inadequate infrastructure and overcrowded classrooms, making effective teaching and learning difficult.

He explained that the school's appeal for additional classroom facilities had received a positive response from the MP, resulting in the construction and furnishing of the new block.

Mr Katamani expressed gratitude to Madam Gomashie for the intervention and pledged that the school would ensure the proper maintenance of the facility and its furniture.

He added that the provision of desks would ease the financial burden on parents who had previously been required to provide furniture for their children.

However, he appealed for the construction of a washroom facility to address another important infrastructure need of the school.

The commissioning of the classroom block and the planned distribution of additional desks form part of ongoing efforts to strengthen educational infrastructure and improve teaching and learning across the Ketu South Municipality.
