Abla Dzifa Gomashie engages teachers on poor academic performance, pledges support to address challenges
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ketu South and Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has donated 3,000 tables and chairs to selected senior high and basic schools in the Ketu South Municipality to improve teaching and learning.
The donation was made on Friday, October 9, 2026, at the MP's office at Aflao Awakorme, as part of efforts to address the shortage of furniture in schools across the constituency.
The five beneficiary senior high schools each received 200 pieces of tables and chairs. They are Somè Senior High School, Aflao Community Senior High Technical School, Three Town Senior High School, St. Paul's Senior High School, and Klikor Senior High Technical School.
Additionally, 15 basic schools received 100 tables and chairs each to help address their furniture deficits.
The beneficiary basic schools are Sepenukope Basic School, Avoeme Basic School, Somè National Basic School, Kpedzakope Basic School, Aflao Agblekpui Basic School, SS Peter and Paul Basic School, Kpogedi Basic School, Huime Agordome Basic School, Aflao Viepe RC Basic School, Lotakor EP Basic School, Taskconer Basic School, Sukladzi RC Basic School, Hedzranawo RC Basic School, Aflaoga Basic School, and Agbodokope Basic School.
During the presentation, Hon. Gomashie interacted with headteachers and teachers from the beneficiary schools and invited them to identify the major challenges contributing to poor academic performance in the municipality.
Some of the headteachers cited inadequate tables and chairs, a shortage of Teaching and Learning Materials (TLMs), insufficient classrooms, deteriorating classroom infrastructure, teacher shortages, and a lack of motivation among teachers as some of the major challenges affecting effective teaching and learning.
They appealed to the MP to consider instituting a Best Teacher Award scheme in the municipality, expressing the belief that such an initiative would encourage healthy competition among teachers and motivate them to improve their performance.
In response, Hon. Gomashie assured the educators of her commitment to working towards addressing the challenges confronting schools in the constituency.
She pledged to do everything possible to help resolve the concerns raised and improve the conditions under which teachers and pupils operate.
Receiving the items on behalf of the schools, Mr. Seth Akli, a Planning Officer with the Ghana Education Service (GES), thanked the MP for the timely intervention.
He noted that the shortage of desks in many schools across the municipality had been affecting teaching and learning, adding that the donation would help ease the challenge and create a more conducive learning environment for pupils and students.
Mr. Akli urged the beneficiary schools to take proper care of the furniture to ensure its durability and continued use for the intended purpose.
Mr. Wisdom Seshie, Headteacher of Hedzranawo RC Basic School, also expressed appreciation to the MP for the support.
He noted that the donation would go a long way towards addressing the school's desk deficit and improving the learning environment for pupils.
The donation is expected to provide relief to the beneficiary schools and contribute to efforts to improve educational delivery in the Ketu South Municipality.
The engagement between the MP and the educators also provided an opportunity for school authorities to communicate their concerns directly and propose measures to improve academic outcomes across the constituency.
