Mr. Felix Akonta Akakpo, also known as Torgbui Tenuvi II, a youth and developmental chief of the Aflao Traditional Area in the Ketu South Municipality, has announced a major grassroots sports development initiative aimed at strengthening sports at the basic school level.

Under the initiative, 300 sets of jerseys and 300 footballs will be donated to 100 basic schools in Ketu South in October 2026, providing much-needed sporting equipment to young athletes across the municipality.

According to Torgbui Tenuvi II, the intervention forms part of his broader commitment to creating opportunities for young people and investing strategically in the foundations of sports development.

He said grassroots sports at the basic school level is critical to identifying and nurturing raw talent while promoting physical fitness and instilling values such as discipline, teamwork and resilience among children.

Torgbui Tenuvi II noted that he had previously invested in handball, basketball, volleyball and athletics at both the basic and senior high school levels. However, he stressed the importance of football, describing it as the heartbeat of Ghanaian sporting culture and an industry with significant economic and social benefits.

He therefore called for stronger collaboration among private individuals, civil society organisations, NGOs, government and local assemblies to provide sporting equipment, sponsorship and structured youth development programmes.

The developmental chief said his decision to support the schools was also informed by his personal observation of the difficulties some basic schools face in acquiring suitable jerseys for their teams.

He explained that the lack of proper sporting kits could affect the morale and confidence of young boys and girls participating in competitions.

“This intervention is particularly timely as Ketu South prepares to host the 56th Inter-District Sports Festival in 2027,” he said, adding that the support would contribute to the municipality's preparations to host participating districts from across the Volta Region.

Under the programme, each beneficiary school will receive three sets of jerseys and three footballs to support its Boys U-13, Girls U-15 and Boys U-15 teams.

A centralised handing-over ceremony is expected to be held later in October, bringing together sports prefects, heads of beneficiary schools and officials from the Municipal Education Directorate for the formal distribution of the items.

Torgbui Tenuvi II maintained that communities should not always wait for government interventions before addressing pressing developmental challenges.

He encouraged individuals and organisations with the capacity to support community development to contribute to changing the narrative while government continues to provide complementary assistance.

He also extended his best wishes to residents for the new month and prayed for continued strength and sustenance for all.
